Centre History
2008 saw a significant moment in the history of the Centre here at Viney Hill, in that we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the site being used as a camping/activity centre for young people. From being used as a campsite for local youth groups in the early eighties, to the Centre we see today has been quite a journey for all those involved.
From the Diocesan Youth Officer who had original responsibility to the Centre Manager and staff team here today, all agree that to be part of that journey, and to see the difference it has made to many young people has been a privilege not to be missed. The Centre ran for many years as part of the youth work of the local Gloucester Diocese. In 1997 a full time post was created of Centre Warden/Parish Minister, and the diocese gave a grant for work to be done on the buildings and grounds, after which the number of visitors using the site tripled. The warden’s post changed to be a full time Centre Managers position coinciding with a further grant from the diocese to convert the Old Vicarage building to be used as accommodation.
Over the next few years the present staff team was gradually put together, and in 2004 the Centre became an independent charitable trust. The groups that visit the Centre over the years have broadened to include a wide range of children and young people from schools and colleges, cubs and scouts, church groups, social projects including homeless and drug rehabilitation groups, as well as birthday parties and groups of families and friends. More now than ever we are aware of the great privilege we have in sharing our beautiful forest surroundings with the groups that visit us, and remain amazed at the difference that it can make in the lives of young people. To have an experience otherwise unknown, to face challenges and overcome fears surrounded by the beauty of God’s creation, and to achieve something new, is a wonderful opportunity that we continue to be very excited about providing.
